My site got hacked earlier today, courtesy of the big gaping security hole that turned up in Joomla! 1.5 a few days ago. Normally I'm quick to apply such security updates, but I had a few other updates in mind too so I was putting it off for a few days. Getting hacked is a new experience for me, so that'll teach me to be so casual in future! It will also teach me to make backups more often, but fortunately the data hadn't actually been deleted. I found all the articles were still in the database only with the state field changed to -2, so if anybody else falls victim to this same attack (it seems to be scripted so there are probably quite a few), you can fix your database as follows: |

I can't learn Greek. Honestly, I have tried time and time again. I've never really been much of a language person but I don't remember having this much trouble with French or German at school, and that was not only without any genuine interest but also without the advantage of living in those countries. It has nothing to do with the different alphabet - I got that part fine, in fact I'd managed to learn the Greek script almost completely during one long bus journey in London before I moved. And with Greek being a phonetic language, that means I can read all the Greek words around me and know how they should be pronounced (mostly). But that doesn't seem to help at all. It's not just the complicated grammar that I'm having trouble with either - I can't even get to a point where correct grammar is vaguely relevant! |

XHTML has been around long enough now that most people have heard of it, and most web developers know what to do to ensure their code produces valid XHTML. You will often see little notes in page footers claiming "Valid XHTML" or similar, and often enough, it even is valid XHTML. Unfortunately, however, the overwhelming majority of valid XHTML web pages might as well not be, because the browser has no idea that they are, and treats them as the bog-standard tag soup anyway.

I was fortunate the other day to come across Blindsight by Peter Watts. I don't remember now where I spotted the link, but it was noted as being published under a Creative Commons license so I'd downloaded the PDF and carried on with whatever I was doing at the time. I was tidying up my desktop yesterday when I noticed it and decided to take a look. I've only just resurfaced. |

Note: See separate article here for help on installing this driver.I had some wireless problems yesterday, with the r8180 module seemingly missing from Ubuntu Hardy. The only source I had available was the driver from the Realtek website (revision 1027), which didn't want to compile on the 2.6.24 kernel, so I had to fix it myself first. Now that I'm back online, I discovered this project using the mac80211 framework in the new kernels, which seems to be the way forward for this driver, but I've uploaded the patch I used here in case somebody finds it useful.
